Romanın bazı siyahi karakterleri kimi kolaylıklar; sözgelimi bir konser bileti alabilmek ya da bir restoranda yemek yiyebilmek için “geçer”; ancak bir yandan da siyahiler arasında yaşayıp ırksal kimliklerini kucaklarlar. Kimisi de beyazların arasında beyaz gibi yaşar ve köklerini bütünüyle reddeder ve gizler.
