Human Figure Editorial Review
**** Giovanni Civardi's "Drawing People Using Grids" is a comprehensive guide that aims to refine the skills of artists looking to depict human figures and portraits with accuracy and depth. This book stands out for its methodical approach to the classic grid technique, which encourages artists to break down complex images into manageable shapes and proportions. Users praise the book for its detailed exercises across various subjects, from adult portraits to children and even dynamic figures in action. Many reviewers acknowledge the challenge involved in mastering the grid method, particularly for those new to drawing. The author emphasizes patience and practice, suggesting that progress will come with time. For beginners, this book provides essential encouragement, despite the potential frustration of early attempts that may not meet personal expectations. Several artists found the inclusion of diverse subjects, including people of color, to be a refreshing and important aspect of the exercises offered. Civardi's classical style and his reverence for art history resonate strongly with enthusiasts of traditional illustration, appealing to those who appreciate the golden age of magazine illustrations. The author’s method combines traditional skills with modern updates, helping readers navigate the delicate balance of technique and artistic expression. Moreover, Civardi does not shy away from discussing the potential drawbacks of using photographic references, grounding his advice in a realistic understanding of the artistic process. Overall, "Drawing People Using Grids" is recommended for those seeking a structured yet creative way to enhance their drawing skills through the grid method. While the book's rigor can be daunting, it ultimately serves as a valuable resource for aspiring artists committed to honing their craft. **Pros and Cons:** **
