Action & Adventure Editorial Review
"Death Machine" is a compelling entry in the cyberpunk genre that has unfortunately flown under the radar for many viewers. Drawing parallels to the action-packed thrills of “Die Hard,” this film distinguishes itself through the inclusion of a menacing robot death machine, creating a gripping scenario for its characters trapped within a skyscraper. It’s a blend of action, horror, and sci-fi that features impressive practical effects rather than the often criticized CGI found in modern filmmaking. The film's aesthetic is heavily tied to its 90s roots, showcasing a vibrant cyberpunk atmosphere with elaborate set designs, costumes, and a stellar soundtrack that enhances the viewing experience. Brad Dourif’s performance as the mad scientist is particularly notable; he delivers an over-the-top portrayal that adds a distinct flavor of dark humor and eccentricity to the film. Fans appreciate how this balance of intensity and light-hearted moments keeps the audience engaged throughout. The Kino Lorber Blu-ray release has garnered praise for its multiple cuts, which provide viewers with various ways to experience the film, though some discrepancies regarding runtime in promotional materials have caused mild frustration among buyers. Nevertheless, the overall reception of the film remains positive, highlighting its visual appeal and engaging storyline, which makes it a worthy recommendation for both cyberpunk aficionados and general movie lovers. Despite a few critics pointing out mediocre acting and plot originality, many viewers find that the film’s campy charm more than compensates for any shortcomings. In a nutshell, "Death Machine" is celebrated for its nostalgic blend of thrills and laughs, making it a hidden gem worth watching. **
