Gothic Editorial Review
**** Phantom by H.D. Carlton presents an emotionally charged and gripping narrative that captures the complexities of love under dire circumstances. This dark historical romance serves as a prequel to Haunting Adeline, digging deeper into themes of forbidden love, marital strife, and personal turmoil. The protagonist Gigi navigates her dismal marriage to a neglectful husband and finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Ronaldo, who one might label a stalker but whose presence becomes a beacon of hope in her turbulent life. Readers have noted the book's emotional impact; many have expressed how relatable Gigi's struggles resonated with them, making it a dive into their own emotions. The writing vividly portrays the tension and spice within their connection, and the descriptive scenes were highlighted as both captivating and evocative—satisfying fans of steamy romance. The dual perspectives contribute to a rich experience, albeit some felt that the plot experienced moments of sluggishness or a lack of depth. Another point of note is the strong component of historical context that enriches the plot, providing an engaging backdrop against which the characters’ conflicts and desires unfold. A bonus chapter was especially praised, showcasing the author's ability to pull on the heartstrings of her audience. However, some readers expressed dissatisfaction with the story's conclusion, feeling that it left too many questions unanswered, particularly regarding the fate of Ronaldo and the circumstances leading to Gigi's demise. Ultimately, Phantom stands out as an alluring tale filled with passion, sorrow, and a hint of mystery. H.D. Carlton continues to prove her prowess in weaving enthralling stories that explore the darker facets of love. **
