產品詳情
- Factory worker Warrell Swanson has always found meaning in work, dogs, hunting and waitresses. After suffering an injury, he escapes the summer heat at the local tavern with his best friend, and the library, where he falls in love with Defiance, Ohio's beautiful new librarian. But old lust challenges new love and Warrell grapples with a promotion, an indifferent management and the looming threat of a rising river as he considers escaping Defiance for good.Hamilton peers into murky corners with a vivid focus and penetrating wit, retrieving a passionate narrative as authentic as anything out there. -Ben Hamper, author of Rivethead: Tales from the Assembly LineAs real as they come- an insider's view of factory life that is all too rare in our literature. Hell finds the delicate balance between our working lives and our lives off the job, and what happens when love arrives to tip the scales. -Jim Daniels, author of Detroit Tales and In Line for the ExterminatorFull of working man's wisdom, Hell Called Ohio is an ode to the blue collar life. As funny as it is sad, as profound as it is plainspoken, this novel comes at you like an old Bruce Springsteen album and you'll love it just as much. -Peter Geye, author of The Lighthouse Road and Safe From the Sea

Literary Editorial Review
“A Hell Called Ohio” is a debut novel by Josh Smith. The book is a slow-moving, gritty, and introspective story of Warrell Swanson, a blue-collar worker's life over a few dramatic months. It is a story that follows the simple life of Warrell Swanson, an immature male, as he navigates the minefield that is love in his 20s, new work responsibilities and conflicting loves. The novel covers a short period in Warrell’s life, and he does not experience some earth-shattering arc that changes his life. Despite that, the book is a page-turner, with the pleasure of Warrell being his honesty. The description of the settings, characters, interactions, and emotions are sparse but honest, connecting with the reader's heart. However, the book's deliberate pace and lack of plot may bore some readers hoping for a story that moves quicker with more action or drama. The book has multiple messages about finding self-worth, standing true to oneself, and doing the right thing for the greater good. The book shows restraint; the author could have made Warrell a real jerk, but instead, it is a solid depiction of working-class people. The book receives mixed reviews, with some readers feeling an opportunity to describe the setting better was missed, and it left one reader feeling odd and unfinished.
