- The previous night, a double suicide occurred in Tamotogaura, and a man and a woman jumped into the sea together. The man had been pulled out of the sea by a fishing boat returning from hunting and was alive. However, the woman's body was not found.Osamu Dazai, one of the leading writers of twentieth-century Japanese literature and famous for his extraordinary life, published Clown Flowers, which contains autobiographical elements, in 1935, after his second suicide attempt. The short novel, in which Dazai sometimes breaks down the fourth wall and addresses the reader one-on-one, is the first work written by the author about Yozo Oba, the main character of Losing My Humanity. Yozo Oba commits suicide by jumping into the sea in Kamakura with his girlfriend Sono. Her lover dies, and Yozo is rescued by fishermen and admitted to a sanatorium by the sea. While he spends his time with other patients, visiting friends and his nurse, everyone tries to create a cheerful, even clownish atmosphere for Yozo. Yozo, on the other hand, thinks about his past full of mistakes, Sono and his hopeless future. Show more
