- David Hume, one of the founding thinkers of Enlightenment philosophy, tries to establish moral philosophy through the following questions, which are still up to date, in his work Inquiry into the Principles of Morality, written in 1751: Do moral principles derive from reason or emotion? Do we acquire knowledge of moral principles through a chain of evidence and induction, or through a direct feeling and a more subtle inner sense? Should it be the same for every intelligent intelligent being, like all sound judgments of truth and falsehood, or should it be based entirely on the particular nature and structure of the human species, as should the perception of beauty and ugliness?Does it constitute a crime to seize any means of security after a shipwreck, without regard to previous limitations of ownership? Or can we think that if a besieged city is starving, people will choose all the food preserved over themselves and lose their lives, being meticulous about the rules that would otherwise be the rules of equity and justice? . Could any number of people gather together without the binding force of laws or civil courts?Could the equal division of bread during a famine be forgiven as a crime or injustice, even if it was done with force or even violence?
