Colouring Books for Grown-Ups Editorial Review
**** Andrew Loomis's book, originally published in 1951, continues to resonate with both aspiring and seasoned artists alike. Recognized for its insightful perspective on drawing, it serves as a foundational resource that encourages artists to depict not just what they see, but to envision drawings from their minds. Many reviews highlight Loomis’s exceptional ability to demystify complex concepts such as perspective and the impact of light on three-dimensional forms, making it an invaluable guide for anyone serious about honing their drawing skills. Readers appreciate the clarity of guidance provided in the book, complemented by well-structured examples that foster practice and improvement. Even though the artwork may reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the 1950s, the fundamental principles of drawing discussed are timeless. The detailed exploration of linear perspective and other theoretical concepts captures the essence of the artistic challenges faced by drawers, particularly in a pre-digital age when artists were required to render their visions onto various mediums. However, some feedback suggests that parts of the text could be challenging for younger or novice readers, necessitating perseverance to fully grasp the material presented. Artists with more experience may find less new knowledge, though they still appreciate the book's beauty and insightful diagrams. Overall, "Successful Drawing" is deemed essential for developing artists, providing a blend of inspiration and practical instruction that has earned a place in many artists' collections. **
