Chamber Music 95234 Editorial Review
Adès: The Tempest is an exceptional recording of a modern opera that premiered in 2004. The performance features a fantastic cast including Christine Rice and Simon Keenlyside, and it is conducted by the composer himself. Reviewers have highlighted how the music intertwines beautifully with the drama, creating an immersive experience, with special praise for the original sound of Ariel, dubbed as a 'soprano on helium'. The libretto, crafted by Meredith Oakes, transforms Shakespeare's complex text into a form that is more operatically accessible, allowing for unique interpretations of the story. While some listeners noted a connection to the styles of Wagner and Strauss, the piece remains a significant addition to the operatic repertoire, asserting its place among 21st-century masterpieces.
